TiVo offers new function to take television shows on the go

Monday January 3, 2005
TiVo users longing to take their recorded shows with them on the road will have not much longer to wait as today the TiVoToGo service was unveiled. According to a press release, TiVoToGo will allow owners of TiVo Series2 standalone recorders (currently those without included DVD recording technology - a separate update will be available later) to transfer most types of recorded programming over a home network and directly to a laptop which has special software installed on it.

To calm copyright fears, the programming will be password protected. Also, programming with Macrovision copy protection (i.e. pay per view and HBO style channels) will not be copyable.

Owners of TiVo Series2 recorders will be able to participate in the new portable progamming service once it has been automatically downloaded to their machines sometime over the next month or so. Those not wanting to wait can try their luck via the "priority request" list.
