Portable Entertainment's Friday Pick: Griffin iTrip FM Transmitter for Fourth Generation iPods
The iTrip from Griffin is a simple device whose primary function is to get your music from your iPod to a nearby FM radio. While many FM transmitters are capable of doing this, the iTrip tends to be a step above based upon ease of use and tight integration into the fourth generation iPod (click wheel based) itself.
The iTrip works by simply plugging it into the headphone and remote ports on the top of the iPod. It fits snugly and provides a combined profile (especially when viewed from the side) which is not unsightly in the least. While connected to the iPod, the iTrip requires no additional power source and also shuts itself down after one minute of silence to help conserve battery life.
One of the most attractive things about the iTrip is that, unlike many other products of its kind, it can broadcast to any FM station on the dial. This is especially useful in urban areas where most channels are sucked up by local radio stations which broadcast extremely strong signals. Selection of the best station is done through a combination of the iPod’s play/pause button, your radio and a special “playlist” with all of the FM frequencies which you download to your player through iTunes.
The one thing to keep in mind with the iTrip, or any FM transmitter for that matter, is the sound quality. As Griffin will tell you on their website, “it will never sound better than the best FM radio station you've ever heard.” That being said, the iTrip is definitely worth a consideration for your iPod accessories holder, especially when on the road.
