Motorola developing Windows Mobile music phones
The new Motorola/Microsoft phones, said Motorola, will add support for Microsoft Windows Media technologies such as Windows Media Digital Rights Management (for subscription based content usually found online) and Windows Media Audio (Microsoft’s default digital audio file format). By supporting these Windows Media technologies, a user with a compatible phone would be able to have Windows Media Player recognize the device and make it possible to sync and transfer music from their PC to the mobile. Synced music could include files either copied from CDs to a computer’s hard drive or downloaded from pay-per-download or subscription based services such as Napster to Go.
Additionally, it looks as if the two companies will develop cell phones which would allow for discovery and acquisition of music directly over the existing cellular network of a provider like Cingular. Consumers would not need to connect their phones to a PC to download music in this case, but would instead be able to do it wirelessly.
These new moves come as Motorola also continues to support Apple’s iTunes through some of their phones, according to a News.com article.
