Nike & Apple Buddy Up for Exercise, iPod Style

Wednesday May 24, 2006
If you’re an iPod owner who likes to take his or her player with you as you pound the pavement, take note: Apple and sports footwear maker Nike have team up to create a new way of tracking your exercise progress wirelessly through your iPod via input sent from special shoes. Enter the Nike+iPod Sport Kit.

The Nike+iPod Sport Kit, according to Apple and Nike, consists of a wireless sensor which is inserted into Nike’s new line of Nike+ shoes (starting with the hip Moire) and also a receiver which attaches to an iPod nano. The sensor monitors your exercise progress, reporting to and storing on your iPod nano information on time, distance, calories burned and pace. This info can be viewed on screen and also provided as real-time audio feedback through your headphones. The data can also be uploaded to a special Web site to help you track your performance.

The Nike+iPod Sport Kit is expected to price at $29 and should be available for Windows and Mac users within the next two months via Apple’s online store, Apple’s retail stores, Nike’s online store, Niketown, NikeWomen and select other retailers.
