Philips in June 2006 introduced a new portable media player which lets users download recorded TV shows from a device like a DVR or VCR. The new PMC7230 Portable Media Center, due out in September, promises to give devices like the Apple video iPod a run for its money.

Features:

The Philips PMC7230, priced at $349.99, has a 30GB hard drive for storing upwards of 15,000 audio tracks, five hours of video or 8,400 digital images. The player, which is PlaysForSure certified, is compatible with a growing number of online subscription services like Napster for audio and CinemaNow for video.

Besides being compatible with PlaysForSure online services, the PMC7230 lets users record selected TV shows in MPEG-4 format from compatible devices by setting the Philips’ player’s timer. The PMC7230 also has a 3.5-inch LCD screen to provide what Philips feels is a quality viewing experience for the player’s users.

In terms of battery life, Philips says the PMC7230 will offer up to five hours of video playback or 18 hours of audio enjoyment via a rechargeable battery. The Portable Media Center is capable of synchronizing with Windows Media Player on a PC for easier management and transfer of its media contents.

Other features of the Philips PMC7230 include a kickstand for propping up the player for easier viewing.
