As someone who used to listen to cassette-based Sony Walkmans as a child, it’s amazing to me just how much headphones have progressed through the years.
Take iLuv’s Tatz Broken Heartz headphones, for example. I honestly wasn’t expecting much from these. So I was pleasantly surprised when they turned out to be quite good. Read on for my thoughts about the device.
PROS
Clean and clear sound: The first thing you’ll notice when listening to music with the Tatz THP-901 is the excellent music clarity. Although not as bass-heavy as the V-Moda Crossfade LP, it still features enough thump to sound good. It’s nice, clean sound also works better with various music genres than more dance-oriented, bass-heavy headphones.
Light weight: The lighter build makes it more conducive to extended listening than heavier full-size headphones. It also features adequate padding for the ears and upper part of your head.
Design selection: The Broken Heartz headphones come in three patterns: black, black-and-red, and white-and-pink. The feminine white-and-pink pattern also sports a more edgy design than your typical design for girls. All three basically have a tattoo type of look.
Headphone jack adapter: The THP-901 comes with a large headphone jack adapter for use with the bigger headphone slots you sometimes see in stereos or component audio systems.
Some noise isolation: It doesn’t completely eliminate outside noise. But it features enough noise isolation to make a difference.
CONS
It’s pretty wide: The extra wide profile of the Tatz Broken Heartz headphones makes it harder to store when you’re traveling or out and about.
Padding not as soft: The padding is nice but it’s not as soft as the ones you see on some higher end full-size headphones. Then again, this is on the lower end of high-end headphones (or upper end of mid-range headphones) so it’s not that big a deal.
Price: At $79.99 it’s still not as pricey as higher-end headphones but it’s high enough to make consumers seriously consider the price tag before buying. Then again, I've looked it up via other online retailers and I’m seeing them sell for far, far less than the suggested retail price (see the Compare Prices tab).
CLOSING THOUGHTS
The iLuv Tatz THP-901 Full-Size Headphones offers clear and clean sound that makes it a more flexible device for different kinds of music.
It’s ideal for people who prioritize music clarity over bass, which the Tatz still has but it isn’t at the booming levels seen in competitors that are geared toward DJs or club music lovers.
I haven’t had a chance to compare it with the higher end of Skullcandy. But I think it sounds better than the Skullcandy headphones that sell for $40. An excellent set of headphones overall.
