Audiovox was at CES 2005 with a large scale portable DVD player announcement: seven new models due to hit store shelves this year. Screen sizes, according to a press release, were to range from 3.6 inches to 10.2 inches and features were to include built-in batteries, wireless remote controls, IR wireless headphone transmitters and built in game ports.
The larger screen models, of which no specific availability dates were given, will support playback of DVDs, audio CDs (including CD-R/CD-RW) and picture CDs. Other features to be found on the four unnamed models will be digital out, built in stereo speakers, optional cable ready TV modules, built in FM modulators and rechargeable batteries.
Audiovox was a little more forthcoming in specifics on two named models – the D1420 ($149) and D1905 ($329). The former, which will be targeted towards the under 18 market, will offer a 4.2 inch screen and built in battery, stereo speakers and cigarette lighter adapter for in the car use. The D1905 meanwhile will have a 9 inch screen, built in SD/MMC card reader and an optional joystick with 20 built in games.
Pixa:
Last but not least is little Pixa. Their MP-810 portable DVD player model sports an 8.4” flip up color screen and is priced at $399. The most interesting feature on this unit is its wireless capabilities.
The MP-810 comes with wireless headphones which communicate through infrared to the player. This effectively removes wire clutter. Besides the headphones, included with the MP-810 is a TV tuner/antenna set which plugs directly in and allows the user to tune into and view nearby live television broadcasts.
Other notable features of the MP-810 include A/V input, adjustable screen brightness, 160 degree viewing angle and three hour playback time on a rechargeable battery. Playback support is provided for DVDs, audio CDs and picture CDs.
